Nationality: American
Based In: New York

How did you start your career?
I started by testing every chance I could. There was a point when I was testing 2-3 days/week. I assisted for about 6 months and decided it wasn’t for me so testing was my way to prove myself. It took 2 years for anyone to notice my work and then V Magazine and Nylon gave me front of book jobs and it went from there.

How would you describe your style?
My style is very graphic/sleek/minimal. I am all about finding interesting angles and shapes and playing with light and shadow.

I shoot a lot of black and white because I find that I am more concerned with the shape and emotion/connection with the subject, than I am with the color. I try to keep my lighting very simple and classic, often using only 1 light.

What do you think is your best work so far?
I think my best story was a story I did in April 2008 for MIRAGE Magazine (coming out in October). It was an all black and white story and I couldn’t find the stylist I was looking for so I decided to just do jeans and topless and go really raw, sexual, and dark with it. I knew exactly what I wanted for that shoot and didn’t care what anyone thought about it.

Who or what has influenced you?
Kanye West, Jay-Z, Tom Ford, Nathaniel Goldberg, Hedi Slimane, Paris Vogue, and Kate Moss.

What sets you apart from other people in your profession?
My drive.

How would you describe your view of the world?
Optimistic.

What is your favorite childhood memory?
Playing in golf tournaments around the US with hopes of becoming a professional golfer.

What music do you like to work to?
It really depends on the subject. For Selita Ebanks, who I just shot, the playlist was rap/hip hop. For others, they perk up with really cheesy 80’s music. “Eye of the Tiger” gets everyone going! I prefer Pandora.com to ipod playlists on set!

Three people you would love to work with:
Kanye West, Keira Knightley, Kate Moss

Describe your dream projects:
Shooting a Kanye West album cover and Kate Moss for the cover of Paris Vogue.

What worries you?
Not living up to my own expectations of myself.

What are you loving at the moment?
Yoga. I try to do it 2-3 days a week. It’s very peaceful and relaxing.

What is something unfashionable that you love anyway?
Polo shirts and loafers.

Film or book that has had a big impact on you:
The Man in Full by Tom Wolfe.

Best advice you have ever been given?
Patience is a virtue.

What advice would you give to someone starting out in the industry?
Know that it takes 1-2 solid years of constant shooting to get anywhere. Assist. Don’t compare yourself to others.

Who do you think is one to watch?
Myf @ Next (model). Columbine Goldsmith (photographer)
